Few anime from the early 2000s managed to combine post-apocalyptic adventure, black comedy, shameless fan service and genuinely memorable characters quite like Masatoshi Usune’s Desert Punk. Known in Japan as Sunabōzu, the series takes place in a devastated future in which much of Japan has become the enormous Great Kanto Desert. The old civilization has disappeared, leaving behind ruins, weapons, mercenaries, gangs and scattered communities struggling to survive in an unforgiving landscape.
Leggi tutto: Tribute to Junko Asagiri | Most iconic sexy and tickling scenesAt the center of this strange world is Kanta Mizuno, better known as Desert Punk, a diminutive but exceptionally capable mercenary whose reputation is considerably larger than his physical stature. He is greedy, opportunistic, theatrical and frequently ridiculous, but he is also extremely resourceful. His jobs take him through a wasteland where survival depends as much on cunning as on firepower.

The original manga began serialization in Comic Beam in 1997 and eventually ran for 22 collected volumes, concluding in 2020. Gonzo adapted the material into a 24-episode television anime directed by Takayuki Inagaki, which aired from October 2004 to March 2005.
What makes Desert Punk particularly distinctive is the way it refuses to treat its protagonist as a conventional hero. Kanta can be extraordinarily competent one moment and spectacularly pathetic the next. His appetite for money and his weakness for attractive women repeatedly compromise his judgment, becoming an essential part of the series’ comedy. His reputation is undermined when the curvaceous Junko Asagiri takes advantage of his hormones and double-D charms.

The result is a show that remembers the excesses of its own premise. Sex appeal is not simply decoration in Desert Punk. It is frequently used as a weapon, a sexy distraction a bargaining chip and a source of deception, particularly through Junko, whose appearance is deliberately constructed to be almost comically incompatible with the harsh environment around her.
Desert Punk has several memorable female characters, but they occupy very different places within its visual and narrative landscape.

Taiko Koizumi, better known as Kosuna, eventually becomes Kanta’s apprentice and one of the central figures of the story. She is considerably younger than the adult women around her, and her character is primarily defined by her development as a mercenary rather than by sexual presentation. Her relationship with Kanta gradually becomes one of the show’s more important partnerships, as she develops from an inexperienced trainee into a capable and increasingly independent fighter.

Natsuko Kawaguchi provides another contrast. She is associated with the Machine Gun Brothers and possesses a much more combat-oriented identity, with her history connected to Kanta and the political conflict surrounding the Oasis Government.

Her appeal comes less from overt fan service than from the contrast between her personality, combat ability and position within the larger story.

Then there is Junko Asagiri.

Junko is the character who most deliberately embodies Desert Punk’s fusion of beauty, sexuality and manipulation. She is a mercenary, a rival and an occasional ally, but her physical appearance is immediately treated as part of her arsenal. Her nickname, the “Vixen of the Desert”, captures the concept perfectly: she is attractive, calculating and fully aware that other people are willing to make irrational decisions because of her.

Junko is depicted as a tall, striking young woman with very long purple hair, green eyes and fair skin. Her silhouette is dramatically curvaceous, with an especially prominent bust (maybe a Double D-cup) that the series repeatedly turns into a visual gag as well as a component of her characterization. One database, for example, lists her measurements as incomplete and describes the bust as larger than a G-cup rather than supplying a genuine official specification.

Her clothing reinforces the silhouette. Junko’s desert outfit is close-fitting and designed around her distinctive proportions, rather than hiding them beneath the bulky protective equipment normally associated with survival in the Great Kanto Desert.

This creates one of the central visual jokes of her character. Junko looks almost impossibly glamorous for a world dominated by dust, ruined machinery and mercenary violence. Her long purple hair, pronounced curves and fitted clothing make her immediately recognizable against the muted desert landscape.

Junk Asagiri’s large breasts in “Desert Punk”
Junko’s appeal is not simply a matter of having a voluptuous body. The series gives her a personality that actively exploits the effect her appearance has on other people.
Kanta is the obvious example. His weakness for large-breasted women is established almost immediately, and Junko’s first appearance is consequently structured around his inability to behave rationally in her presence. His attraction does not make him stronger or more heroic; it makes him vulnerable. That inversion is what gives the fan service its comedic purpose.
The first episode, originally titled “Yōkai to Boin” and released in English as “The Demon and the Double D’s“, introduces precisely this dynamic. The episode aired on October 4, 2004 and adapts the first chapter of the manga.

Junko initially appears to be someone whom Kanta can rescue, but the apparent damsel-in-distress scenario quickly becomes a trap. She is involved with the conflict surrounding the Kawazu Clan, and Kanta’s attraction makes him particularly easy to manipulate. By the end of the episode, it is clear that the beautiful woman he thought he was helping has been several steps ahead of him.
This is where Junko’s cleavage and pronounced silhouette become more than simple decoration. The anime repeatedly frames her body in a way that makes her physical presence immediately noticeable, but the joke generally depends on Kanta’s reaction. Junko knows precisely what effect she has on him, whereas Kanta repeatedly behaves as though he has only just discovered it.

Her sexuality therefore functions almost like another piece of equipment in her mercenary arsenal.
She can appear vulnerable, attractive or flirtatious when that is useful, only to reveal moments later that she has been manipulating the situation. The contrast between her glamorous appearance and her mercenary pragmatism is a large part of what makes her memorable.

Composer Kohei Tanaka wrote a dedicated instrumental theme for her, simply titled “Junko’s Theme”. According to the soundtrack booklet material preserved by the Desert Punk reference archive, Tanaka specifically commented that Junko is more overtly sexy in the anime and joked about the exaggerated movement of her breasts. He chose jazz for her theme, contrasting it with Desert Punk’s own musical identity.

There is a particular visual reason Junko remains recognizable decades after the anime first aired: her silhouette is extraordinarily simple.
Long purple hair, green eyes, a tall frame, a narrow waist and an exaggerated bust create an instantly identifiable shape. Even without dialogue or facial expression, the character can be recognized from her outline.

The cleavage is an important part of that visual vocabulary. Desert Punk does not generally attempt to disguise Junko’s proportions beneath realistic clothing. Her outfits are designed so that the upper part of her silhouette remains prominent, and scenes involving Kanta frequently exploit this contrast between his fixation and her complete awareness of what she is doing.

Junko’s first episode remains the clearest demonstration of how Desert Punk uses sensuality.
“The Demon and the Double D’s” establishes her as an object of Kanta’s immediate fascination before transforming that fascination into the mechanism of his defeat. The episode’s title itself makes her physical appearance part of the joke.

The visual direction repeatedly emphasizes her curves and neckline when she is interacting with Kanta. Her close-fitting clothing leaves little ambiguity about the character design, and the contrast between her composed demeanor and Kanta’s increasingly distracted behavior creates much of the comedy.
The most memorable aspect is not any individual pose but the way the camera and character reactions establish a visual hierarchy: Junko enters the scene looking confident and physically imposing, while Kanta, despite being the supposedly legendary mercenary, immediately becomes the one who has lost control of the situation.

The subtitles later show Kanta still fixated on her enormous breasts after discovering that he has been tricked. That reaction effectively establishes their relationship for the remainder of the anime. Junko knows that Kanta wants her; Kanta knows that Junko knows; and yet he repeatedly falls for variations of the same temptation.
Junko’s sensual presentation continues beyond her introduction. Her character theme is another revealing detail.

One of the later stories centered directly on Junko is episode 17, “Junko and Pursuer”, also known in the English release as “Perv in Pursuit”. In this storyline, Junko seeks Kanta’s assistance because Tech, a former romantic associate from a corporate-spying operation, is attempting to force her into marriage.
The story is significant because it shifts the emphasis slightly. Junko is still unmistakably presented as an attractive and highly sexualized character, but the narrative gives her a more substantial role as someone with her own history, enemies and relationships.

The episode’s very premise depends upon the perception other characters have of her. Her beauty attracts attention, but it also creates problems that she must solve. The same characteristic that allowed her to manipulate Kanta in the opening episode can make her a target later in the story.

Tickling scenes in “Desert Punk”
Junko Asagiri is the focus of at least three tickling scenes (Episode 3, Episode 17, Episode 20), all of which involve tickling her breasts. Kanta grabs Junko’s breasts, squeezing them or exploring her cleavage, and his hand movements cause her to feel a strong tickling sensation that makes her laugh and squirm.
