Hayate no Gotoku!, also known as Hayate the Combat Butler, is a manga about Hayate Ayasaki, an unlucky 16-year-old boy burdened with a massive debt of ¥156,804,000 left by his irresponsible parents who fled. On Christmas Eve, to escape the Yakuza who want to settle this debt by selling his organs or enslaving him, Hayate tries to kidnap Nagi Sanzenin, a 13-year-old ultra-wealthy girl and sole heir of a vast fortune. However, a misunderstanding leads Nagi to believe he is confessing love to her. After Hayate rescues her from actual kidnappers, Nagi hires him as her personal butler.
The story follows Hayate performing his butler duties while protecting Nagi from danger as people target her fortune. It also explores Hayate’s interactions with other girls like his former classmate Ayumu Nishizawa, the student council president Hinagiku Katsura, and childhood friend Athena Tennousu. Hayate eventually pays off his debt but continues serving Nagi, and the manga delves into the battle for the Sanzenin inheritance and the evolving relationships among the characters. The story balances comedy, action, and romance elements in a slice-of-life setting.
