DanDaDan is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yukinobu Tatsu. It follows the story of two high school teenagers with opposing beliefs: Momo Ayase, who believes in ghosts but not aliens, and Ken Takakura (nicknamed Okarun), who believes in aliens but not ghosts. They make a bet to prove each other’s beliefs wrong by visiting locations linked to aliens and the occult. Momo gets abducted by aliens, which unlocks her psychic abilities, while Okarun becomes possessed by a spirit. Together, they fight supernatural entities including yōkai (spirits) and aliens with the help of allies. The plot also explores themes of friendship, rivalry, and romantic tension.
The story begins with their adventures involving ghosts and aliens, but then evolves into deeper arcs including Okarun’s quest to retrieve his missing testicles and Momo suffering from a mysterious curse that shrinks her and erases her presence from others’ memories. The series combines supernatural, sci-fi, and action elements with character-driven storytelling and has been serialized since April 2021. An anime adaptation aired from October to December 2024, with a second season starting in July 2025.
DanDaDan manga chapter 173 revolves around a group including Momo Ayase, Okarun, Aira, Kinta, Jiji, and Vamola chasing after a character named Kouki. They encounter the school nurse, Joo, who surprisingly has the ability to access something called “Empty Space,” a concept in the story that allows access to a silent zone where alien fights or supernatural events can happen away from normal people’s view. In this chapter, Kinta demonstrates intelligence by quickly figuring out how to handle the Empty Space problem and uses a drone for maneuvering. Jiji, Momo’s childhood friend, also plays a significant role.
Two of the protagonists are attacked by small creatures, Pygmy, which crawl along their bodies, causing them to feel extremely ticklish.
