Power Girl’s editorial history
The character’s editorial history began with her first appearance in All Star Comics #58 in 1976, created by Gerry Conway, Ric Estrada, and Wally Wood. During the Bronze Age, she was a prominent member of the Justice Society of America and a founding member of Infinity Inc..

However, her history became famously convoluted following the 1985 series Crisis on Infinite Earths, which erased Earth-Two from existence. To keep her in the new unified continuity where Superman was meant to be the sole Kryptonian survivor, writers retconned her as the granddaughter of an Atlantean sorcerer named Arion. This unpopular change persisted until the 2005-2006 series Infinite Crisis, which restored her original origin as a refugee from the Pre-Crisis Earth-Two.

In 2011, the New 52 relaunch introduced a different version of Power Girl from a newly rebooted Earth-2, where she had started her career as that world’s Supergirl. The original Pre-Crisis version of the character was eventually brought back into main continuity by Doctor Manhattan in the series Doomsday Clock. In current DC comics, she has undergone further development, gaining temporary psychic abilities and eventually a new “astral punch” power. She has been featured in several solo series over the decades, including a popular run starting in 2009 and a new ongoing series launched in 2023.

Why are Power Girl and Supergirl so different?
While she and Supergirl are biologically the same person, Power Girl is typically depicted as older, more mature, and more aggressive in her fighting style.

She is a powerful Kryptonian with standard abilities such as flight, super strength, and heat vision. In her civilian life, she has long used the secret identity of Karen Starr, an accomplished businesswoman and scientist, though more recently she has adopted the persona of Paige Stetler, a technology specialist and columnist for the Daily Planet.

In terms of editorial and artistic history, a famous legend suggests that co-creator Wally Wood intentionally drew her breasts larger in each issue to see if editors were paying attention, though official DC sources often dismiss this as an urban legend or a joke.

Some analyses of the comics show that her proportions remained relatively consistent during Wood’s original run, and the actual shift toward her “bosom queen” status is often attributed to the exaggerated artistic style of Bart Sears in the late 1980s. Furthermore, artists like Alex Ross have helped differentiate the two by giving Power Girl a heavily muscled, bodybuilder-like physique that stands in stark contrast to Supergirl’s more slender, “willowy” teenage frame.

In-universe explanations for their different body types include theories about different ancestry on their respective versions of Krypton or the different environmental factors during their puberty. For example, Power Girl matured while in a “Symbioship” that provided a virtual reality education during her long flight to Earth, which may have impacted her development differently than Supergirl’s childhood on Argo City. Additionally, Power Girl’s personality is more aggressive, level-headed, and independent, as she made a conscious choice not to be seen as a derivative of Superman.

How big are Power Girl’s boobs? Official measurements
Power Girl is widely recognized as the most well-endowed superheroine in the DC Universe, frequently described as the “queen of superhero mammary glands”.

Her physical measurements are explicitly cited in character profiles as 34G-24-34, with her bra size consistently established as a 34G. To highlight the scale of her proportions, sources often compare her to other heroines.

While Power Girl is a G-cup:
- Wonder Woman is typically portrayed as a DD-cup
- Black Canary as a D-cup
- Huntress as a C-cup.

In-universe, her bust is prominent enough to draw frequent commentary, most notably from Black Canary, who famously described Power Girl’s assets as a “national treasure”.

The degree of her “bustiness” varies depending on the artist, with estimates ranging from a D to an H-cup, though she is nearly always depicted as significantly more buxom than her counterpart, Supergirl.

Visual comparisons in media such as the game Injustice 2 show that Power Girl’s chest is physically larger, rounder, and perkier than Supergirl’s, which is attributed to Power Girl being a fully matured woman in her mid-20s while Supergirl is a teenager.

Why does Power Girl have a boob window?
The primary in-universe explanation for Power Girl’s “boob window” is her ongoing search for her own identity. She famously explained to Superman that she originally left the circular opening in her costume because she wanted to have a symbol like his, but she could not think of anything that did not feel like a copy of his “S” emblem. She intended to close the hole once she found a fitting personal emblem, but she never did.

Recently, another in-story reason was introduced, suggesting that the window is a practical design choice to prevent her from getting too sweaty in the chest.

Additionally, the costume is portrayed as a symbol of her independence and self-assurance as her own woman. Power Girl has stated that the suit simply shows what she is—female, healthy, and strong—and that she refuses to apologize for men who choose to stare at her. Some writers and fans have also posited that the revealing nature of the suit serves a tactical purpose by acting as a distraction for villains during combat, drawing their eyes away from her face. In the New 52 continuity, the design was even referred to as a Kryptonian fashion trend.

From an editorial and real-world perspective, the creation of the boob window is often attributed to co-creator Wally Wood. A famous industry legend suggests that Wood and his inker intentionally drew her breasts slightly larger in each issue of All Star Comics to see if their editors were actually paying attention. Although DC Comics has officially dismissed this story as a joke that people eventually took as truth, it remains a heavily discussed piece of comic book history. Co-creator Gerry Conway mentioned that he thought a large “P” symbol on her chest would look silly, leading to the circular design as a nod to conventional hero costumes.

The design is also widely recognized as a commercial choice aimed at increasing profits by appealing to a target audience of young men. Over the years, artists such as Bart Sears and Alex Ross further emphasized her proportions, cementing her status as the most well-endowed heroine in the DC Universe. Despite occasional attempts by DC to cover the opening or redesign the costume for modern sensibilities, the character often returns to this classic look because it has become her most iconic and recognizable attribute.

Is Power Girl the bustiest woman in the DC Universe?
She is consistently depicted as having the largest bust among any superheroine in the DC Universe—often described in-universe as a “national treasure” or specifically as a G-cup—making her chest one of her most recognizable physical attributes. While Supergirl is typically portrayed with more slender, teenage proportions, Power Girl is drawn as a mature, voluptuous, and often heavily muscled woman, which inherently draws significant visual attention.

Does really everyone stare at Power Girl’s chest?
Within the comics, this staring is sometimes treated as a tactical distraction. Batman once explicitly suggested using her endowments to distract Toyman, and some writers have proposed that the window serves a purpose similar to the Punisher’s skull logo, drawing a villain’s gaze to a specific point to “mess with their heads” during combat.

Power Girl herself is well aware that people stare and has famously refused to apologize for it, stating that her suit simply shows she is “female, healthy, and strong”. She has argued that if men choose to “degrade themselves by staring and drooling,” it is their personal problem and not hers
